In the 1990s, Sonic became a British pop diva and an internationally renowned dance music DJ.

Childhood singer

As a child, Sonic had other hobbies, so we might never hear her music. From the age of 6, little Sonya, having an excellent physique, made serious plans for athletics. “I dreamed of becoming a world champion. Trained every day. I think I had an obsession with sports,” recalls Sonic.

But at the age of 15, she abandoned this venture, taking 2nd place in the competition. She decided that if she couldn't win, she needed to do something else. At the age of 17, Sonya was told that she had a beautiful voice, so she decided to take up music.

The beginning of the musical career of the artist

At the age of 17, Sonya joined the reggae band Fari, where she honed her singing skills. Then she went through one of the most difficult periods in her life. Her mother decided to return to Trinidad, but the girl insisted that she was already independent and wanted to stay in London.

As a result, she became homeless. Sonya lived on the streets and ate chips. This made the girl seriously think about her life, so she decided to sign a contract to create her first single.

Sonic began collaborating with Cooltempo Records and released the song Let Me Hold You. This song quickly reached the top 25 of the UK dance charts without any promotion.

Then the girl took part in other people's projects, collaborating with Tim Simenon and Mark More. The S'Express team, in which Sonic performed, was very popular. But after his collapse, the girl had to think about a solo career.

Sonic DJ career and club performances

To become a DJ, Sonya spent three years sitting at home and training. To get a job in this highly competitive field, she told potential employers about her singing abilities. Singing, playing as a DJ and being a woman at that time was a real sensation.

In 1994 she made her debut as a DJ. In January 1995, Sonic made her first full-time DJ appearance at Swankey Mode, a London club run by Simon Belofsky. She gained fans not only in Europe, but also in Hong Kong, Australia, even Jamaica.

In 1997, Sonic became a resident of the infamous Manumission Club in Ibiza. There she met many influential people who later helped her release her first album.

In parallel, she played house in clubs such as Cream in Liverpool and Gatecrasher in Sheffield. She has also performed in Germany, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Australia, Italy and Norway.

“In England, pop recordings start in clubs. As a DJ, I've seen what people want when they go to clubs," Sonic said.

The peak of the singer's popularity

She enjoyed huge popularity after a performance in 1999 in Tampa, where she performed her song It Feels So Good. This composition quickly became a hit in the United States. From that moment on, radio stations and various record labels began to take an interest in Sonic's potential.

Following the huge success of It Feels So Good in the US, Sonic re-released it in Europe. This allowed her to enter the list of the most popular DJs in Europe. Her compositions began to sound in American, European clubs, and even in African countries.

But success was intertwined with personal tragedy. When this single took over the world charts, Sonic signed a contract with Serious Records, then she suddenly lost her child, whom she was carrying for eight months. “This is the worst and most destructive thing that has ever happened to me in my life,” said Sonic.

Although it was psychologically very difficult for her to survive this loss, the recording studio announced an ultimatum to her. She had to release a music album in 40 days. And she did it! This is a clear confirmation of the determination and talent of Sonic. Her first studio album, Hear My Cry, was released in 2000.

This album immediately gained popularity throughout Europe. Over 1 million copies have been sold in the UK alone. She then recorded the single Sky, which she dedicated to her lost child. This single hit #2 on the UK Singles Chart in September 2000. And in November, the re-released single I Put A Spell On You enters the top 10 of the British chart.

Sonic was in the pages of the Guinness Book of Records as the first female solo artist to be the best in this category for three weeks in a row. At the 2001 Brit Awards, she received the award for "Best British Female Solo Artist". She was also nominated in this competition in the categories: Best Dance Act, Best Dance Newcomer, Best Single and Best Video.
