5 Seconds of Summer: Band Biography

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) is an Australian pop rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, formed in 2011. Initially, the guys were just famous on YouTube and released various videos. Since then they have released three studio albums and held three world tours.

In early 2014, the band released She Looks So Perfect as their only album to top the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK.

Their self-titled debut album was released in June 2014, followed by a live album, LiveSOS. Their first headlining tour Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour was created in support of this album.

5 Seconds of Summer released their second album Sounds Good Feels Good in October 2015, topping the charts in eight countries. This was followed by a live documentary, How Did We End Up Here. In December 2016, the band released their b-sides and rarities This Is Everything We Ever Said to celebrate their fifth anniversary.

The band released their third album Youngblood'15 in June 2018. It was just as successful as the previous two. In the US, 5 Seconds of Summer became the first Australian act to reach the top three on the Billboard 200. They then embarked on the Meet You There tour. It would seem that this could have stopped, but to understand the band and their art, you need to dig a little deeper.

WHAT'S ALL THE BEGINNING?

For 5SOS, it all started in 2011, when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood, who went to Norwegian Christian College, started posting cover songs of popular hits on YouTube.

Luke's first video, a cover of Mike Posner's Please Do't Go, inspired by Chris Brown's Next To You, has over 600 views. In December 000, they were joined by drummer Ashton Irvine, then the band was fully formed.

The group attracted interest from major music labels and publishers, after which they signed an agreement with Sony ATV Music Publishing. Despite having no publicity other than Facebook and Twitter, their first music release Unplugged peaked at number 3 on the iTunes chart in Australia and reached the top twenty in New Zealand and Sweden.

Their international rankings increased significantly when One Direction member Louis Tomlinson posted a YouTube link to their song Gotta Get Out, revealing that he was a 5 Seconds of Summer fan for a while.

On November 19, 2012, 5 Seconds of Summer released their first single, Out of My Limit, with the video reaching over 100 views within the first 000 hours. The group was once again a subject of interest for One Direction when Niall Horan posted a tweet linking to 24SOS' first single Out of My Limit.

In December 2012, the boys took a songwriting journey to London, where they met with artists such as McFly, Roy Stride of Scouting for Girls, Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs, Jamie Scott, Jake Gosling, Steve Robson and James Bourne of Busted. 

Who influenced 5SOS?

On February 14, 2013, it was announced that 5 Seconds of Summer would support One Direction on their Take Me Home World Tour.

The tour kicked off at the O2 Arena in London on February 23, 2013 and spanned cities across the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, including seven shows on Allphones in the boys' hometown.

During a break from the tour, the guys from the band 5 Seconds of Summer returned to Australia, where they gave their concerts, for which tickets were sold out in a matter of minutes. The group enjoyed immense popularity and became more famous. 

On November 21, 2013, the band announced that they had signed with Capitol Records, and already on February 5, they registered their first single, She Looks So Perfect, for pre-order on the iTunes Store.

On March 5, 2014, it was announced that 5 Seconds of Summer had rejoined One Direction, supporting them on the Where We Are tour in the US, Canada, UK and Europe. 

The connection between 5SOS and One Direction extended to both artists. Fans moved from one group to another group. This led to 5SOS being labeled as a boy group in the media, but captivated the hearts of many of their female fans. Ashton Irvine compared the group's followers to Fall Out Boy, who also caused a sensation among the fans. 

ONLY FORWARD 

At the end of March 2014, their single She Looks So Perfect was released in the UK. 5 Seconds of Summer became the fourth Australian group to release only one single and hit the top in the UK - they are the first to do so in 14 years. On April 9, she debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

On May 9, the group released their second single Don't Stop. It debuted at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, peaked at number one in four countries and reached the top 10 in eight countries overall. Billboard said that all of the band's lyrics are 5SOS' bid for a winsome pop-punk anthem with "sweet" lyrics. 

On May 13, 5 Seconds of Summer announced that their self-titled debut album would be released on June 27, 2014 in Europe and Australia, with other releases coming later.

The album was won by Kerrang! the award and Luke Hemmings said it was a great honor to win it as it is rare. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, peaked at No. 1 in 13 countries, and reached the top 10 in 26 countries.

On July 15, the band released their third single, Amnesia, which also featured Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte (an American pop punk band).

As Billboard said, “With an amazing vocal performance and some of the most sizzling lyrics on the album, Amnesia's new single is a success. Amnesia demonstrates the versatility of 5SOS, and the question arises, how do they combine it only in themselves?

On October 12, the group released their fourth single, Good Girls, for which their music video reached over 2 million views in 48 hours, taking them even higher. On November 16, due to the great excitement, the guys topped the iTunes Chart. 

GOOD SOUNDS FEELS GOOD 

In May 2015, the band embarked on their first headlining tour Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Everything went well, even better than expected. So the guys tightened their belts and started working on the next album. 

On July 17, 2015, the band released She's Kinda Hot as the first single from their second studio album. On August 12, she announced that her second studio album would be titled Sounds Good Feels Good. And on October 9, the band released their second single, Hey Everybody!, informing their fans that they were going on the Sounds Live Feels tour.

Good Sounds Feels Good was released worldwide on October 23, 2015. It went #2 in their home country and #5 in the UK. In the United States, XNUMX Seconds of Summer became the first (non-vocal) group to debut their first two full-length albums.

The group released a third single, Jet Black Heart, along with a music video that featured some of their fans.

In 2016, the band embarked on the Sounds Live Feels Live tour, which sold out. She has toured North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. On June 3, the group announced the single Girls Talk Boys. The song was included in the film Ghostbusters (2016) and was released on 15 July. 

5 Seconds of Summer: YOUNG BLOOD

On May 11, 2017, 5 Seconds of Summer announced the dates of their performances at several music festivals. The band performed in Asia, Europe and South America from August to September 2017. The last music festival she played that year was the Brazilian Rock Concert in Rio.

On February 22, 2018, the group released the single Want You Back and announced the 2018 promotional 5SOS III Tour. The band toured and performed in cities across Europe, the United States, Singapore, Australia, Mexico and Brazil from March to June 2018. In addition to the tour, the group performed at music festivals, held acoustic evenings at radio stations and got on a television show.

On April 9, 2018, the band announced that Youngblood's third studio album would be released on June 22, 2018, and also announced their fourth headlining tour, Meet You There, which took place on August 2 at various arenas in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States and Europe. .

The second single from the album (the title track) peaked in Australia in May 2018. It remained on the ARIA Chart at No. 1 for about eight consecutive weeks.

The official US charts were also bursting with the boys, reaching the top 5 and top 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100. It was certified triple platinum in Australia, platinum in New Zealand, gold in the US and another gold in the UK.

5 seconds of summer today

After almost two years of silence in 2020, the rockers returned to combat formation. This year there was a presentation of a new LP band called CALM. Interestingly, the musicians decided to dedicate the tracks of this collection to their "fans".

“We remain popular only because our fans stay with us and support our work,” commented the musicians.
