Despite the fact that there were already gothic bands before them, many consider the Bauhaus group to be the ancestor of gothic music.

Their work inspired and attracted attention with dark themes and intellectual trends that eventually became known as the "gothic rock" genre.

History of the Bauhaus Group

Its members are Peter Murphy (born July 11, 1957), Daniel Ash (born July 31, 1957), Kevin Haskins (born July 19, 1960) and older brother David J. Haskins (born April 24, 1957).

The guys grew up in the district of the famous Gothic church (the ruins of the ancient city of Northampton), and were also passionate about the Sex Pistols.

Their debut single Bela Lugosi's Dead was released in August 1979. It was a 9 minute song recorded in the studio the first time. However, it failed to chart in the UK.

By far their most famous work is The Doors Pink Floyd. This song was featured on the soundtrack to Tony Scott's The Hunger (1983).

In 1980 they recorded their first album, In The Flat Field. Their next work, The Sky's Gone Out, showed the band's evolution towards experimental sounds, and was released in 1982 to accompany a live album.

During this time, the band began to have internal problems due to the over-prominence of vocalist Peter Murphy. He became the main advertising face of Maxel cassettes. He also had a cameo role in the film El ansia ("Hunger"), where all the members of the group were supposed to appear.

Already in 1983, the Bauhaus group presented their last album, Burning Inside, which became their biggest commercial success.

Breakup of the Bauhaus group

Due to the sharp creative differences of the members, the group broke up as suddenly as it appeared.

Before Bauhaus disbanded (1983), all members of the group made several solo works. Singer Peter Murphy worked temporarily with Japanese bassist Mick Karn in the band Dali's Car."

Daniel Ash also recorded and released solo albums Tones on Toil with Kevin Haskins and Glen Campling. David J has released several solo albums and collaborated with several musicians over the years.

In 1998 the Bauhaus met for the Resurrection Tour which included two new songs such as Severance and The Dog's a Vapour. The songs were recorded during the tour (there was a live recording).

After Peter Murphy's solo tour (in 2005), Bauhaus began a full tour of North America, Mexico and Europe.

In March 2008, the band released their latest studio album. Go Away White is still praised for its interesting content with songs that range from classic rock to the darkest and deepest themes.

Vocalist John Murphy

Peter John Murphy was born on July 11, 1957 in England. From 1978 to 1983 Peter Murphy was the singer for the Bauhaus. After the group disbanded (in 1983), he and Mick Karn founded the group Dali's Car. As a result, the guys released only one album, The Waking Hour.

In 1984, Dali's Car disbanded, after which Peter Murphy began his solo career. His first album, Unless the World Falls Apart, was released two years later, which also featured former Bauhaus member Daniel Ash.

In the 1980s, Murphy converted to Islam, where he was very much influenced by Sufism (Islamic mysticism).

Since 1992 he has lived in Ankara (Turkey) with his wife Beyhan (née Folkes, founder and director of Modern Dance Turkey) and children Khurihan (1988) and Adem (1991). In addition, he worked there with the musician Merkan Dede, who made contemporary Sufi music.

In 2013, Murphy was arrested in Los Angeles and given a suspended sentence of three years. He was arrested for drug abuse while driving and possession of methamphetamine.

Introduction

The Haskins brothers met Ash in kindergarten and they played together in many bands since childhood. Kevin pounded on everything he could until he got a drum kit.

As a teenager, he saw a Sex Pistols concert, inspiring him to form a band with his brother.

Influenced by the gothic architecture of their hometown, as well as the Sex Pistols, glam rock and German expressionism, the group was a powerful cocktail of the early 1980s, the ingredients of which reacted violently with each other. It was they who made it clear to the listeners what the term "gothic rock" means.
