The Hoobastank project comes from the outskirts of Los Angeles. The group first became known in 1994. The reason for the creation of the rock band was the acquaintance of singer Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who met at one of the music competitions.
Soon another member joined the duo - bassist Markku Lappalainen. Previously, Markku was with Estrin in the Idiosyncratic formation.
The formation of the line-up ended after the talented drummer Chris Hesse joined the band. It is noteworthy that Chris found out that the band was looking for a drummer through a local newspaper.
Initially, Hoobastank was an independent project. The musicians did not have a contract signed. To make themselves known, the team began to perform in the districts of Los Angeles.
Gradually, the popularity of the new group increased, and after the release of the cassette mini-album Muffins, the group, together with Incubus, began performing in such popular nightclubs in Los Angeles as: Troubadour, Whiskey and Roxy.
Then the activity of the musicians was no longer so active, but in 1998 they united again to "open a new page" in the creative biography of the Hoobastank group.
The creative path of the group Hoobastank
In 1998, the musicians loudly reminded of themselves by recording their own opus with the difficult title They Sure Don't Make Basketball Hortslike Short Like They Used To. The popularity of the group began to increase, and in August 2000 the group recorded a contract with Island Records.
After this event, the musicians released several tracks that allowed music lovers to understand that they were real professionals in their field. Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? Rod Stewart and Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper.
In the early 2000s, Hoobastank had enough material to release a new album. Soon the musicians started recording a record, which was to be called Forward.
During the recording of the collection, the producer felt that the material was too "raw". The recording of the first album was "frozen" for an indefinite period. But a year later, the collection appeared on the Internet.
Debut album by Khubastank
In 2001, the group's discography was replenished with the Hoobastank album of the same name. First, the record went gold, and then platinum. The team woke up popular.
The songs Crawling in the Dark and Running Away, released in support of the debut album, also entered the top, appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The eponymous disc took the 25th position on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The debut album became popular not only in the United States of America. Residents of Asia and Europe also appreciated the talent of young musicians. In support of the collection, the team went on a big tour.
During active touring, the musicians released the third single from the album Remember Me, and the composition Crawling in the Dark was used as the soundtrack to the movie "Fast and the Furious".
A year later, the band presented the EP-album The Target, which included three new tracks: The Critic, Never Saw It Coming and Open Your Eyes. In addition, the EP includes acoustic versions of four previously released tracks.
After the studio work, the team planned to go on a long tour. However, most of the concerts had to be canceled due to the fact that Estrin was seriously injured while riding a mini-bike. In the fall, the musician returned to action, and the Hoobastank band successfully left the headlining Nokia Unwired Tour.
The Thereason compilation, which was released in 2003, peaked at number 45 on Billboard. A year later, the rock band accompanied Linkin Park on the Meteora tour. After the tour, it became known that Lappalainen had left the band. Markku was replaced by musician Matt McKenzie.
Release of third studio album
Soon, fans became aware that the musicians had begun recording their third studio album. The release of the collection was scheduled for December. But it soon became clear that the release was delayed for six months. Musicians never set themselves a time frame.
“For us, the main thing, as for musicians, first of all, is the quality of compositions. If the tracks rock us, then they will rock the fans too ... ”, Estrin wrote. “Only then will the album be released. We are not in a hurry…”
In 2006, the band's discography was replenished with the third studio album Every Man for Himself. The band's music has undergone significant changes. Each track included in the new album was different in genre from the next one. For this zest, you can thank vocalist Doug Robbie, who mastered new techniques. In addition, musicians have better equipment.
“The new compositions very clearly reflected the idea that each of us can choose our own path. After all, you must admit that our future, mood and life in general depend only on us ... ”, said the vocalist of the Hoobastank group.
The album was very popular with fans and music lovers. Soon the collection took 12th position on the US Billboard chart. And this is despite the fact that the tracks If I WereYou, Inside of You and Born to Lead did not appear on the 1st position of the music charts, the album received a "gold" status.
In support of the new album, Hoobastank went on tour. The musicians played concerts in the United States of America, Asia, Australia, and also in South Africa.
Preparation and release of the fifth studio album
In the same 2007, an announcement was posted on the band's official website: "For the next collection, the musicians of the band have set a very high bar." Fans held their breath in anticipation of the new collection.
In 2008, the musicians presented the musical composition My Turn from the band's fifth studio album. The song became the theme song for TNA Wrestling's Destination X 2009.
The fifth studio album was released only in 2009. The collection was called For(n)ever. The album debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200 and at number 4 on the Billboard Alternative Albums. A little later, the musicians presented the track So Close, So Far.
Music critics noted that the soloists worked on the sound. It has become more edgy and post-grunge, sometimes raw and bold. Musical compositions teetered on the edge between classic post-grunge with a garage sound and pop-rock ideally suited for radio broadcasts.
Also in 2009, The Greatest Hits: Don't Touch My Moustache was released. The compilation was recorded at Universal Records in Japan. The tracks included in the new collection were chosen by Hoobastank fans.
In 2009, especially for Halloween, Hoobastank released a cover version of the famous Ghostbusters track. The song became the theme song for the Ghostbusters movie. A music video was later released for the track.
At the same time, the presentation of an acoustic album took place, which was called Live From the Wiltern. Fans and music critics warmly received the new work of the rock band.
In 2010, the band presented the musical composition We are One, which was included in Music for Relief, a record in support of the victims in Haiti.
Presentation of the Fight or Flight album
In 2012, the musicians announced the release of a new album, Fight or Flight. At the same time, the band shared with the fans a new single This is Gonna Hurt.
Influential critics considered Fight or Flight the worst work of the rock band's discography. However, the fans supported their idols. This is evidenced by the number of sales.
After the release of the aforementioned album, there was a break in the work of the band. The musicians took part in interesting collaborations. In addition, they annually delighted fans with performances and their appearance at prestigious music festivals.
Musical style of Khubastank
Hoobastank is an alternative rock band. In their tracks, the musicians combined some semblance of metal riffs, as well as notes of emotional lyrics.
Prior to the Hoobastank compilation, the band performed musical compositions mainly in the style of funk rock and ska rock.
The presence of ska music was practically non-existent, since only the saxophone sounded from musical instruments.
Since the early 2000s, the band's sound has changed significantly. The musicians abandoned the saxophone and switched to alternative music. Since 2001, post-grunge, "seasoned" with pop-rock and punk rock, is clearly audible in the tracks of Hoobastank.
Hoobastank group today
In 2018, the discography of Hoobastank was replenished with the new album Push Pull, the sixth studio album by the American rock band. The compilation was released on May 25, 2018 by Napalm Records.
2019 was also rich in new items. The musicians presented the track Right Before Your Eyes. In addition, the band delighted fans with live performances.
