Nydia Caro is a Puerto Rican-born singer and actress. She became famous for being the first artist from Puerto Rico to win an Ibero-American Television Organization (OTI) festival.

Childhood Nydia Caro

The future star Nydia Caro was born on June 7, 1948 in New York, in a family of Puerto Rican immigrants. They say that she began to sing before she learned to speak. Therefore, Nydia began studying vocals, dancing and acting at a specialized art school that develops creative inclinations in children from adolescence.

Choreography, vocals, acting skills and the skill of a TV presenter - all these subjects were given to Nydia with extraordinary ease. After graduation, the girl tried her hand at television.

The first step "towards fame" Caro took when she first appeared on the NBC television show. It seemed that the career would be long and successful. But in 1967, Nydia lost her father. To drown out the pain of loss, the girl moved to her historical homeland in Puerto Rico.

Insufficient knowledge of the Spanish language did not interfere with Caro's career. However, upon arrival in Puerto Rico, she immediately began working as the host of a popular teen show on Channel 2 (Show Coca Cola). To improve her Spanish, she enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico and graduated with flying colours.

At the same time, her first album, Dímelo Tú, was released by Tico. While working in television, Nydia Caro had the opportunity to get the lead role in the soap opera Sombras del Pasado.

Festivals, competitions, victories

In the early 1970s, Nydia began participating in vocal festivals and competitions. Performing the song Carmen Mercado Hermano Tengo Frio, Caro took 1st place at the festival in Bogotá. At the festival in Benidorm, performing the song Vete Ya by Julio Iglesias, she took 3rd place, and with the song Hoy Canto Por Cantar, written in collaboration with Riccardo Serratto, she won the OTI festival in 1974. And immediately became a national heroine. Prior to this, Puerto Ricans had not risen so high in the rankings.

At the same time, Nydia Caro's own project El Show de Nydia Caro was launched on Puerto Rico television, which was a huge success. The most popular Latin American artists took part in it. The decade of the 1970s was very successful for Nydia Karo. 

In 1970 she won the Bogota Festival. And in 1972 she went to Tokyo (Japan), where she sang La Borinquena before the fight for the world boxing title between George Foreman and José Roman. The Ring En Espanol noted that her singing of the Puerto Rican national anthem probably lasted longer than the fight itself. In 1973, she won the prestigious Benidorm Festival in Spain. And in 1974 she won the prestigious OTI festival. 

Karo has become mega-popular in her homeland and far beyond its borders. Her concerts took place at such famous venues as Club Caribe and Club Tropicoro in San Juan, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center in New York and in other countries of South America, Spain, Australia, Mexico and Japan. Caro enjoyed great popularity in Chile, where her songs were listened to with pleasure.

1980s and 1990s in the life of Nydia Karo

In the early 1980s, Nydia married producer Gabriel Suau and had a son, Christian, and a daughter, Gabriela. But in his personal life, not everything was as successful as in his career. A few years later, this marriage broke up. The couple managed to maintain friendly relations for a long time. During this time, Karo released about 20 albums and CDs.

In 1998, Nydia again surprised her old fans and gained new ones with the release of the folk music album Amores Luminosos. This album was highly appreciated not only by fans, but also by critics. And the song Buscando Mis Amores won the hearts of thousands. It harmoniously used the folk instruments of Puerto Rico, India, highland Tibet and South America. The lines of famous poets sounded: Santa Teresa de Jesus, Fraya Luis de Leon, San Juan de la Cruz. 

Nydia Caro again became the first Puerto Rican performer of alternative music, new age. This album entered the top 1999 in 20 (according to the Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular in Puerto Rico).

Creativity of the singer after 2000

Millennium for Nydia is marked by filming in Hollywood. In the film "Under Suspicion" she played Isabella. Partners on the site were Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. And in 2008, Nydia starred in the series "Don Love" along with Carolina Arregui, Jorge Martinez and others. In total, Karo's filmography includes 10 films and TV shows.
