Finland is considered a leader in the development of hard rock and metal music. The success of the Finns in this direction is one of the favorite topics of music researchers and critics. The English language band One Desire is the new hope for Finnish music lovers these days.
Creation of the One Desire Collective
The year of creation of One Desire was 2012, although the musicians released their debut album only five years later. The founder of the group was the drummer Ossi Sivula. Until 2014, there were constant line-up changes in the band, the musicians left, and new ones took their places.
Finally came Jimmy Westerlund, former producer of several well-known bands and who came to Finland from the USA. He agreed to produce a number of songs for the guys, and this attracted the attention of Serafino Petrugino, who ran the A&R label.
Accession of talents
The team urgently needed a talented and charismatic vocalist, and Westerlund remembered Andre Linman, who previously sang in the group Sturm und Drang.
His tempered character from childhood allowed him to achieve in life what few succeed in. And, of course, his talent.
The new songs of the One Desire group, thanks to the updates in sound, have gained originality, and the group has become special and recognizable. The guys began to be recognized not only in their native quarters, and this was the first success.
And Jimmy Westerlund officially joined the team in 2016. Following this, the band accepted bass player Jonas Kuhlberg into their lineup. It was a very successful formation. It was in this composition that the group began its development on the big stage.
Quest for Van Dizaer's Identity
In the same 2016, the guys had confidence that now they are ready to reach a wide audience. The first album was called the same as the group itself, One Desire.
The disc was 100% original and contained no cover or collaborative versions. All ten songs are a pure product of One Desire. The album was released in 2017.
The group's most "star" hit Hurt was a significant success. Even those listeners who are not aware of the band's Finnish origins can clearly hear Nightwish's influence in this single. Hurt can safely be called a power rock composition. Its author is Jimmy Westerlund. The musicians admitted that it was this song that brought them to a completely different level.
One Desire - Finnish hard rock's new hope
Hurt served as the basis for the video clip. It seems to many that the clip was made in the "outdated" style of the early 2000s - a weak plot and color scheme of this work. However, others see it as a nostalgic quest for the 2000s era.
In addition, it is worth considering that the video clip is the first work of a group of this kind, the guys still felt insecure in front of the camera lenses. The group had everything ahead of them.
Another bright single Apologize. This hard rock composition is of high quality, but it does not have any special distinctive features of One Desire in itself. A video was also made for this song, and it was already much better than the previous one.
The plot of the video clip was very simple - the musicians performed their works in the church. But, as they say, everything ingenious is simple. Many people liked the naturalness and harmony of the atmosphere of the clip.
Experiments in creativity
But the single Whenever I'm Dreaming is completely different from the previous ones. In it, vocalist Andre Linman showed his talent, Andre succeeded very well in high notes. All the songs of the group are different, each has its own zest, and this is quite a smart and thoughtful decision. Each single sounds like an original piece.
Another interesting composition is This Is Where The Heart Break Begins. It is essentially a romantic ballad written by André Linman. However, romanticism in this case does not imply quiet melody. The sound is quite hard rock, voluminous and powerful.
The first work of the Van Dizaer group
The debut album One Desire was released under the Italian label Frontiers Records, which is known for its work with rock classics. But in the compositions of the group, the influence of the classics is heard quite strongly, and this, apparently, interested the well-known label.
The disc includes songs: Shadow Man, After Youre Gone, Down and Dirty, Godsent Exctasy, Through the Fire, Heroes, Rio, Battlefield of Love, K!ller Queen, Only When I Breathe.
As soon as the debut album was released, the band embarked on their first European tour. The guys performed in countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy and Germany.
The choice of these countries is understandable, because it is there that rock is valued very highly. The performances were successful, the audience heard all the brightest hits of One Desire and the songs of the first album.
One Desire today
So far, the group is at the initial stage of its development, it is looking for its face and doing experiments. The guys need to find a sound that would make them instantly recognizable among the endless variety of "metal" bands.
Now this group is "under the gun" of hard rock fans not only in Finland, but also in other countries.
