Taking Back Sunday (Teikin Baek Sunday): Band Biography

Amityville is a city located in the state of New York. The city, having heard the name of which, most instantly remember one of the most popular and famous films - The Horror of Amitville. However, thanks to the five musicians from Taking Back Sunday, it is no longer the only city where a terrible tragedy occurred and where the film of the same name was filmed. This is also the city that gave fans of alternative rock a wonderful band - Taking Back Sunday.

Formation Taking Back Sunday

Despite the fact that Taking Back Sunday was formed back in 1999, only a year later the group will adopt the original line-up, which exists to this day. It was then that Adam Lazzara, responsible for the bass guitar, changed roles, becoming a full-fledged vocalist. He was replaced by Sean Cooper. After the changes, the group began to look like this: Eddie Raines - founder and guitarist, Adam Lazzara - vocalist, John Nolan - keyboards, guitar, Sean Cooper - bass, Mark O'Connell - drums. These rearrangements were beneficial, allowing the guys to record a five-song demo album over the next two months.

After a short time, the rumor about the talented guys scattered throughout Long Island. In many ways, it's worth saying "thank you" to the guitarist, who had great and strong ties with the local emo community. Having gained albeit a small, but still popularity, the group rushed to conquer the musical Olympus.

Collaboration with Victory Records

On March 4, 2002, Taking Back Sunday released its first video for the song "Great Romances of the 12th Century". The director was Christian Winters, a longtime friend of the band. It was this video that the guys showed to the music managers of the record company Victory Records. Both the video and the song were highly acclaimed by Victoria's bosses, allowing TBS to sign their first contract. Already on March 25, "Great Romances" was played on all radio stations, and on March XNUMX, a full-fledged disc was released - "Tell All Your Friends".

The legendary album "Where You Want To Be"

At the same time, citing fatigue due to numerous tours, Nolan left the line-up. After a short period of time, Cooper also left. The group was not prepared for such upheavals, which is why it was on the verge of disintegration. However, they quickly found a replacement. So, Matt Rubano was taken on bass, and Fred Mascherino took the place of Nolan. In this composition, the line-up released the second disc "Where You Want To Be".

Despite the fact that the use of other musical instruments made the sound somewhat different from the debut album, this did not prevent "Where You Want To Be" from becoming a success. In total, more than 220000 copies were sold, and the album itself firmly took the third position on the Billboard-200 chart.

The album became one of the best-selling in the alternative rock genre, and a year later the number of sold copies exceeded 630000 copies. Such a stunning commercial success allowed the band to get into the list of the 50 best albums of 2004 according to the legendary Rolling Stone magazine.

To the advertisement "Where You Want To Be!" the record company approached the recording in a rather non-standard way for those times. Instead of spending money on the usual marketing, the managers connected the fans and the Internet. Interested fans began to advertise the upcoming album. In exchange for active promotion, they received pre-sale tickets, various branded gifts and other goodies.

Over the next eight months, Taking Back Sunday not only toured, but also recorded the soundtracks for Spider Man 2 and Elektra.

Later years of Taking Back Sunday

In 2005, TBS signed a major contract with Warner Bros. Records, after which they began writing their third album, Louder Now. However, the guys did not stop there. They actively participated in the musical life of America, appearing in various talk shows and live performances.

So, one of the most striking was the appearance of the group on Live Earth. It is the largest music festival in the USA. The festival featured Akon, Fall Out Boys, Kanye West, Bon Jovi and other cult artists. A year later, the team released the first documentary. It showcases four live performances and real behind-the-scenes footage.

In 2007, the band said goodbye to Fred Marcherino. He decided to focus on recording a solo record. He was replaced by Matthew Fazzi, who was responsible not only for the guitar, but also for backing vocals. A year later, a new album was released - "New Again". With him, the group traveled not only to the United States, but also visited other countries - Great Britain, Ireland, Australia.

Matthew Fazzi left the band in 2010. But this did not stop Taking Back Sunday from conquering the musical Olympus, because John Nolan and Sean Cooper returned. A couple of years later, the group in the original composition went on an anniversary tour - "Tell All Your Friends". During the tour, the band played their debut album in full.

2014 - present

In the winter of 2014, the musicians announced that a pre-order for the new album "Happiness Is" had started on iTunes. A year later, Taking Back Sunday will embark on a lengthy North American tour. On tour, they were accompanied by Menzingers and letlive.

After 4 years, the fans experienced not the most pleasant moments. It was announced that longtime founder Eddie Reyes was leaving Taking Back Sunday due to a drinking problem. Despite assurances that he hoped to return, after a short time, Eddie founded a new group.

In 2018, the musicians announced an album dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of Taking Back Sunday "Twenty". The collection includes compositions from records released in collaboration with both Victory Records and Warner Bros. records.
