The Gories (Ze Goriez): Biography of the group

The Gories, which means "clotted blood" in English, is an American team from Michigan. The official time of the existence of the group is the period from 1986 to 1992. The Gories were performed by Mick Collins, Dan Croha and Peggy O Neil.

Mick Collins, a leader by nature, acted as the ideological inspirer and organizer of several musical groups. All of them played eclectic music at the intersection of several styles, one of which was The Gories. Mick Collins had experience playing drums as well as guitar. Two other performers - Dan Croha and Peggy O Neil - learned to play musical instruments after joining the group.

It is believed that The Gories were one of the first garage bands to add blues influences to their music. Creativity of the team is referred to as "garage punk". This direction in rock music is at the junction of several directions.

"Garage punk" can be described as: eclectic music at the intersection of garage rock and punk rock. Music that makes recognizable "dirty" and "raw" sound of musical instruments. Bands usually collaborate with small, obscure record labels or record their music at home on their own.

The Gories played in a rather eccentric manner. This style of performance can be seen in their videos. In an interview, founder and member Mick Collins said that he and the other members of the band often broke guitars, microphones, microphone stands, and even smashed the stage several times during performances. The group sometimes performed in a state of alcoholic euphoria, as its organizer later admitted.

The beginning of activity, the rise and fall of The Gories

The band released their first album, Houserockin, in 1989. It was a cassette tape. The following year they released the album "I Know You Fine, but How You Doin". After making two albums, The Gories signed a record deal (a garage label from Hamburg).

Having started their work in Detroit, the group during its existence performed with concerts in Memphis, New York, Windsor, Ontario.

In general, during its existence, the group broke up three times, there were many prerequisites for the breakup of the musical team. The Gories also actively performed at all sorts of house parties. The team existed until 1993, when they broke up, having released three albums by that time.

After the collapse of the group he created, Mick Collins performed as part of the Blacktop and The Dirtbombs teams. Another member of the musical team Peggy O Neil joined the bands 68 Comeback and Darkest Hour.

In the summer of 2009, the band members got back together to team up with musicians from The Oblivians (a punk trio from Memphis) to tour Europe. In 2010, the band reconvened for a North American musical tour.

In one of the interviews, the lead singer of The Gories spoke about his view on the reasons for the breakup of the group. "We stopped loving each other," Mick Collins explained. He also told:

"He and other musicians thought they would have 45 records before it was all over, but the project fell apart faster than they expected."

Interesting facts about the founder of the group

Mick Collins' father had a huge collection of rock and roll records from the 50s and 60s. The son then inherited them, and listening to which influenced his work. 

Mick Collins was 20 when he founded The Gories. Another side project of Mick Collins was Dirtbombs. She is also noted for mixing different musical styles in her work. 

The frontman worked as a radio host for a music program at one of the radio stations in Detroit. 

He served as the producer of the group's album Figures of Light. 

Mick Collins also played in The Screws, an eclectic punk band. 

In addition to his musical work, Mick Collins has performed one acting role in a movie and is a fan of comics. 

The founder of The Gories is a fashionista. In an interview, he called himself that, and told the story that he had a particularly favorite jacket. He always wore it to the band's shows. And then I took it to the dry cleaners. This jacket has become his "calling card". A piece of clothing could not be "reanimated" in dry cleaning only after a tour of 35 cities.

In one of his interviews, Mick Collins admitted that fans of the band's work often ask him when the members of The Gories will get together again. However, the founder of the group laughs it off and replies that this will never happen again. He says that he went on to organize the group's "reunification" tours under the influence of a fleeting impulse and inspiration. Since then, he has not seriously considered the prospect of holding a "reunion show".
