Saosin (Saosin): Biography of the group

Saosin is a rock band from the United States that is quite popular among fans of underground music. Usually her work is attributed to such areas as post-hardcore and emocore. The group was created in 2003 in a small town on the Pacific coast of Newport Beach (California). It was founded by four local guys - Beau Barchell, Anthony Green, Justin Shekovsky and Zach Kennedy ...

Origin of the name and early successes of Saosin

The name "Saosin" was coined by vocalist Anthony Green. From Chinese, this word is translated as "cautious." In the XNUMXth century, this word was used in the Celestial Empire to refer to fathers who warned their sons against marriage for the sake of money (and, of course, without real feelings) on girls who were dying.

The group's first mini-album (EP) was titled "Translating the Name" and was released in June 2003. However, thanks to the Internet, even before its release, the guys from Saosin had a lot of fans. They were very active on music portals and forums. The excitement was also facilitated by the fact that from time to time the band posted excerpts from the songs of the future EP on their website.

"Translating the Name" was able to reach the first place in orders on the then authoritative resource Smartpunk.com. And some of the critics even consider this album to be one of the most influential post-hardcore releases of the 2000s.

Of course, many people remember the unusual, high tenor of Anthony Green. His voice and manner of performance were the most important components of success here. However, already in February 2004, Anthony left the group. He began to engage in solo work, as well as other projects.

Creativity of the group from 2006 to 2010

The departed Green was replaced by Cove Reber. It is his vocals that sound on the band's first full-length album. It was called, like the rock band itself, "Saosin", and was released in September 2006. In principle, both critics and ordinary listeners received this album warmly. Among other things, it was noted that on this record there are simply amazing guitar riffs. In general, none of the songs can be called frankly weak.

On the Billboard 200, "Saosin" peaked at number 22. And one of the songs from this album - "Collapse" became the soundtrack to the computer game "Burnout Dominator" (2007). It was also used for the horror film Saw 4 (2007). It should also be noted that to date, 800 copies of this album have already been sold. This is a very good result!

Saosin's second LP, In Search of Solid Ground, was released three years later on Virgin Records. And on vocals here again was Cove Reber.

This disc was already received by the band's fans ambiguously. The band obviously experimented with style, and not everyone liked it. Plus, the band members had to hastily change the already presented cover. It depicted a tree, one of the trunks of which smoothly passed into the body and head of a beautiful girl. The fact is that for many this cover seemed too pretentious and pretentious.

At the same time, it is interesting that in the charts "In Search of Solid Ground" performed even better than the previous longplay. Say, on the Billboard 200 chart, he managed to get to position 19!

It should also be added that 4 songs from this album were released as separate singles. We are talking about songs such as "Is This Real", "On My Own", "Changing" and "Deep Down".

Reber's departure, Green's return and the release of the third LP

In July 2010, it was reported that vocalist Cove Reber would no longer be part of the Saosin team. Other participants felt that Reber's vocal and stage abilities had deteriorated, and he could no longer adequately represent their music.

And it just so happened that after that, for almost four years, the vocalist's position was vacant. During this period, the group was virtually inactive.

Only at the beginning of 2014 it became known that Anthony Green had rejoined the rock band. Already at the Skate and Surf festival, which took place on May 17, 2014 in New Jersey, he performed as a vocalist and frontman of Saosin. And in the future (that is, in the summer of 2014 and at the beginning of 2015), the group gave a number of powerful concerts in various US cities.

And in May 2016, the long-awaited third "studio" Saosin was released - it was called "Along the Shadow". In all compositions here, as in the good old days, Green's voice sounds. Thus, grown-up emocore fans have a real opportunity to nostalgic for the past. At the time of the release of "Along the Shadow", in addition to Green, the band also included Beau Barchell (rhythm guitar). Also there were Alex Rodriguez (drums) and Chris Sorenson (bass guitar, keyboards).

The main edition of the album contained 13 tracks. However, there was also a special Japanese edition which included two additional tracks. Ultimately, "Along the Shadow" even managed to reach the top XNUMX on the main Japanese music chart. And in general, it must be said that the Saosin group has always been well received in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Saosin after 2016

On December 16 and 17, 2018, Saosin performed at the Glass House Concert Hall (Pomona, California). These performances were interesting because in this case, both vocalists of the group, Reber and Green, appeared on the stage at the same time. And they even sang something together.

After that, there is practically no news about the group's activities. However, this does not mean that the musicians who make up its backbone are sitting idly by. So, let's say that Bo Barchell produced and mastered the mini-album of the metalcore band Erabella "The Familiar Grey" in 2020. And Anthony Green, judging by his Instagram page, gave an acoustic concert in July 2021. In addition, a big tour of his other band, Circa Survive, is scheduled for early 2022 (which, by the way, is no less famous than Saosin). In this group, Green also acts as a vocalist.
