The history of the creation and composition of the group The Police

The cult British rock band was created in 1977 in London. Throughout its existence, the group consisted of the following musicians:

  • Sting;
  • Andy Summers;
  • Stuart Copeland.

It all started with Stuart Copeland and Sting. The guys caught themselves on the general musical tastes. They exchanged phone numbers. Soon their communication grew into a desire to create a common musical project.

The musicians had experience of working on stage. So, at one time Stewart played in the progressive band Curved Air, and lead singer Sting played in the jazz band Last Exit. Already at rehearsals, the musicians realized that the compositions lacked a bold sound. Soon a new member, Henry Padovani, joined the team.

The debut concert of the new band took place on March 1, 1977 in Wales. The musicians used their abilities to the maximum. Soon the guys got on tour with Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County & the Electric Chairs.

The release of the first single was just around the corner. Moreover, around the team has already formed its own audience. The first song that came out from the "pen" of the musicians was called Fall Out.

During this period, Sting was noticed by influential and popular bands. He received an invitation to cooperate. The most significant was Strontium 90, where Copeland was also called. During the recordings, the musicians realized that they needed Andy Summers.

The Police are one of the first "white" bands to adopt the reggae style as their predominant musical form. Prior to the arrival of the British act, only a few reggae tracks, such as Eric Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's I Shot the Sheriff and Paul Simon's Mother and Child Reunion, had made it onto the American charts.

Debut album presentation

The new team did not ignore the festivals. In addition, the musicians recorded demos and sent them to popular labels. Despite the variety of stylistic features, the musicians are ready to record their debut collection.

Outlandos d'Amour (the band's debut album) was recorded under incredibly difficult financial conditions. The musicians had only 1500 pounds to complete the work.

Soon The Police signed a contract with the A & M label. The release appeared in the spring of 1978. Other tracks also came out, but they remained in the background, were coolly received by fans of heavy music.

In the fall, the team appeared on BBC2. There the guys tried to promote their own LP. The team presented the single So Lonely, and also re-released the Roxanne track in the United States market. Music lovers received the last composition so warmly that it allowed The Police to hold a number of concerts in North America.

After a tour of North America, the group enjoyed huge popularity. On this wave, the musicians released their second studio album. The record was called Regatta de Blanc. The album peaked at number 1 on UK compilations and hit the top 40 in America.

The musical composition of the same name had a significant impact on music lovers. The group received the prestigious Grammy Award. In support of the second studio album, the musicians went on tour.

1980 was remembered for another tour. The only thing that distinguished him was the extended geography. So, as part of the tour, the musicians visited Mexico, Taiwan, India and Greece.

The release of the third album was not long in coming. In 1980, the musicians presented a new collection Zenyatta Mondatta. The album failed to take the 1st position of the charts, however, some tracks still stood out. Be sure to listen to the songs De Do Do Do and De Da Da Da. The collection received rave reviews from music critics. Thanks to the composition Behind my Camel, the musicians received another Grammy Award.

The first creative break of the group after the peak of popularity

After the presentation of the fifth studio album Ghostin the Machine, the band members went on a world tour. Fans noted that the sound of the songs was significantly "heavier".

Several tracks from the fifth studio album topped the UK and US charts. In the same period of time, the musicians moved to Ireland. It's not just a whim. The move helped reduce the tax burden for the team.

In 1982, The Police were nominated for the Brit Awards. Unexpectedly for fans, the musicians announced that they were taking a creative break.

Sting began a musical and acting solo career. The celebrity starred in several films. In addition, the musician released a solo album. The rest of the group also tried not to sit idle. Stewart composed Do not Box Me In for the movie Rumble Fish. And later he collaborated with Stan Ridgway from the band Wall of Voodoo.

In 1983, the musicians joined forces and presented the album Synchronicity. The collection in the literal sense of the word was filled with mega hits.

From the list of tracks, fans singled out the songs: King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Every Breath You Take and Synchronicity II. As it turned out, the recording of the album took place in hellish conditions.

The musicians, who by that time had already managed to "catch a star", were constantly arguing. Nobody wanted to listen to each other, so the release of the record was postponed for a long time.

After the presentation of Synchronicity, The Police went on tour, where priority was given to the United States of America. However, the tour did not go according to plan and ended in Melbourne. During this period of time, the musicians presented a live album. In 1984, they wanted to award the Grammy Award again to the team, but they were beaten by Michael Jackson.

The fall in popularity and the collapse of The Police

Sting has completely immersed himself in his solo career. The group again took a creative break. Steve started recording a solo LP. In June 1986, the musicians teamed up again to hold a series of concerts and record an LP.

Copeland broke his collarbone, so he could not sit down at the drum set. The restoration of the "golden composition" and the recording of the collection were postponed indefinitely. The only thing that pleased the musicians was the release of the new track Do not Stand So Close to Me. This post is the last one.

The musicians began to work separately. They wrote songs and toured all over the world. The guys occasionally got together to perform under the name The Police.

In the mid-1990s, A&M released a live album of live recordings. The success of the rock group was unique. On March 10, 2003, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him #70 on their list of the 100 Greatest Musicians of All Time. In 2006, a biopic about the group The Police was released, which tells about the rise and fall of the group.

The association and the group The Police at the present time

At the beginning of 2007, journalists said that fans of The Police were in for a pleasant surprise. The fact is that the musicians in honor of the anniversary of the group united and went on a world tour. This event was helped by A&M, who later offered to record another live album.

The number of concerts was small. Tickets for the band's concert were sold out in less than an hour. The largest concert was given in Ireland, where 82 thousand music lovers gathered. The tour ended on August 7, 2008 in New York.
