Zdob și Zdub is the most famous and influential rock band in Moldova. The hard scene of Moldova literally rests on the guys who lead the group. In the CIS countries, rockers received recognition for creating a cover for the track "Saw the Night" by the rock band "Cinema».
In 2022, it turned out that Zdob si Zdub will represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest. But, fans of this information is not surprising. The participants of Zdob și Zdub will visit this event for the 3rd time (they performed at Eurovision in 2005 and 2011). In 2022, they had the opportunity to visit Turin (Italy), together with the Advachov Brothers group.
From the moment of its foundation to this day, the group has been constantly touring. The rock band is a frequent participant of Russian and European festivals. Rockers were lucky enough to perform on the same platform with musical giants.
History of formation and composition of the group Zdob shi Zdub
The team was formed in the mid-90s on the territory of Moldova. R. Yagupov, M. Gynku and A. Pugach met at school. They attended secondary school. Each of these guys literally lived rock. The guys knew how to dream, and they did it on a large scale. Even then, they set themselves the goal of becoming famous.
After receiving a matriculation certificate, young people go to the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports. There they find like-minded people who replenish the group - making the sound of the tracks more "tastier". For a long time Zdob și Zdub were in search of "their" sound. Let's go back to the band's name. "Zdob și Zdub" - means the sounds of drum beats. Rhythms and successful beats seem to confirm that once the rockers chose the right name for their offspring.
The creative path of the group Zdob și Zdub
The first demo rockers are recorded in the year the band was founded. Then the composition Lost World appears. The track passed the selection of the fest "Learn to Swim-1" in the capital of the Russian Federation. Progressive metropolitan youth warmly accepts the group's performance. A couple of years later, the group re-lit up on "Learn to Swim-2".
For the fest, the guys recorded several tracks, namely “In my house” and Hardcore Moldovenesc. The last track unofficially became the anthem of the alternative youth of Moldova. By the way, the composition is still considered the top track of the rock band's discography.
In 1996, the rockers signed a contract with the recording studio FeeLee. At the same time, the band's discography opens with the LP Hardcore Moldovenesc. The record was topped by 12 driving tracks. Almost all songs are recorded in Russian. A year later, in support of the album, the band goes on tour. In the same year, they lit up at the Kazantip festival.
On this "adjustments" from the rockers did not end. In 1997, the musicians dropped the Hardcore LP Moldovenesc. The songs that topped the track list of the disc were recorded in the Moldavian language.
In the late 90s, the rockers toured a lot and hard. Including in 1998 they skated a two-week tour of Germany. During this period of time, their sound is closer than ever to ethnic music.
A new stage in the creativity of the rock band Zdob shi Zdub
The guys start recording the studio album Tabara Noastra. The compatriots of the musicians took part in the recording of the LP, so the album turned out to be incredibly atmospheric and guest. The compilation was topped by 12 tracks. On the territory of the Russian Federation, the record Tabara Noastra went on sale only in 1999. Then in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the rockers personally presented the collection in local clubs.
In the "zero" artists performed at the concert venue of the EuroSonic fest. There they also met the head of Sziget, Dan Panaitescu. This year they appeared at at least 5 more festivals, not counting concerts for their fans.
In the autumn of the same year, they recorded a cover for the work “We saw the night”. The musicians were motivated to take such a step by the desire to take part in the tribute to Viktor Tsoi "Kinoproby". After the premiere of the track, the guys were literally covered by popularity. They have become one of the most discussed rock bands in Moldova.
In 2001 Agroromantica was released. Recall that this is the 3rd studio album of the musicians. In honor of this, the rockers held a number of concerts on the territory of Moldova. Several performances were free of charge. In the same year, the rockers took part in international festivals. They performed at concert venues in Ukraine, Serbia, Italy, Hungary. In 2001, the stars held over 100 concerts around the world.
2003 was marked by the release of the album "450 Sheep". The presentation of the collection took place in Slovakia. From a commercial point of view, the record was successful. The presentation of the LP in his native Chisinau took place only a year later.
In 2004, the rockers "sat down" in a recording studio. They focused on recording an album dedicated to the band's 10th anniversary. The record topped the top 10 tracks since the band's inception, and 5 cool new releases.
Participation in the international song contest
In 2005 Moldovans had a unique opportunity to represent their country at Eurovision. The artists presented the Bunica Bate Doba track to the audience. According to the voting results, they took 6th place. In 2006, the band's discography was replenished with the album Ethnomecanica.
Further, for 4 whole years, the rocker "tormented" fans in anticipation of a new album. Already in 2010, the release of "White Wine / Red Wine" took place. The track list included not only new tracks, but also cool cover versions, as well as works that they sang on various programs.
In 2011, they re-lit at Eurovision. The musicians pleased with the performance of the song So Lucky. In the final of the competition, the artists took only 12th place. In 2012, the band's discography was replenished with the LP Basta Mafia!.
A year later, the artists performed together with a symphony orchestra. Rockers gave the listeners a real pleasure. They performed not only old but also new pieces of music.
2015 was marked by the release of 20 de Veri. In early November 2019, the rockers presented the Bestiarium album. The tour in support of the album took place in 13 cities in Romania.
