After graduation, he worked in the architectural bureau of the City Construction Project and taught at the architectural institute.

Music always sounded in the Makarevichs' large apartment on Komsomolsky Prospekt. Already at an early age, Andrei was well versed in its genres and directions. But, much to the dismay of his parents, the boy did not graduate from music school. He found classes boring and left school in his third year. But in a comprehensive school with an English bias, the guy had great success. He liked geography and biology. For some time, the boy dreamed of becoming a naturalist and studying snakes.
At the age of 12, his father gave his son a guitar, and the life of the future artist immediately changed. He literally did not part with the instrument, he taught himself to play. Thanks to absolute pitch, Andrey performed well the songs of his beloved Okudzhava and Vysotsky. The guy became the soul of the company and in the evenings with his peers sat in the yard for a long time. The guys sang, imitating the members of The Beatles. It was then that Andrei Makarevich had a specific life goal - to become a famous musician. Later, the singer was called the "beatle of perestroika".
Having moved to the 8th grade, the guy decided to act and, together with his friends, created his first musical group, The Kids. The guys performed cover versions of foreign hits. The group presented its first performances on the school stage, in the regional House of Culture.
Creation of the Time Machine group
1969 was a turning point in the fate of the musician. Andrei Makarevich, along with other "fans" of the group The Beatles created a new musical group "Time Machine". It included: Alexander Ivanov, Pavel Rubinin, Igor Mazaev, Yuri Borzov and Sergei Kavagoe. It is phenomenal that the team has been successfully performing with concerts to this day.
In 1971, after graduating from school, the young musician entered the Moscow Architectural Institute (at the insistence of his parents). But the party authorities did not like the rock music that the student was working on.
His group became more popular every day, intriguing even more young people. The administration of the institute had no choice but to expel the student in 1974. The official version is a violation of discipline and the internal regulations of the educational institution.
The young artist was not upset and continued to develop his offspring, which became even more popular outside of Moscow. Later, thanks to the connections of his parents, Makarevich resumed his studies at the institute. But already at the evening department, and against all odds, he received a diploma in architecture.
In 1979, the group experienced a creative "breakthrough". The well-known and influential company Rosconcert decided to sign a contract with the team. Since that time, the group began to be considered legal, and Andrei Makarevich - the official musician, songwriter and performer.
Development of a musical career
All subsequent years, the musician with the group gave concerts in the Soviet Union. In parallel, he managed to star in such films by the famous director A. Stefanovich as “Start over”, “Soul”.
Without changing his love for the bard style of performance, the singer often performed solo concerts in which other musicians of the band did not participate. In such cases, Makarevich used only one acoustic guitar. And he sang exclusively his songs, which were not included in the repertoire of the Time Machine group. Usually the singer tried to keep a certain distance from politics, in particular from politicians. But at the same time he supported all Russian presidents. A concert by Paul McCartney took place in Moscow, where Makarevich sat next to the incumbent president. Some media said that the artist is friends with Vladimir Putin, although the singer himself denied this information.
Until 2014, the star, along with other activists, wrote several letters to both Putin and Medvedev. They concerned the protection of copyrights, the investigation of the Mikhail Khodorkovsky case, free licenses, increasing the level of corruption, etc.
In 2012, Makarevich became a confidant of Mikhail Prokhorov, who ran for President of the Russian Federation, which angered the current head of state. Then the artist was expelled from the Council of Culture and Arts. In protest, Makarevich became a member of the Civic Platform federal committee. The celebrity took an active part in supporting Alexei Navalny in the elections for the post of mayor of the capital in 2013.

The musician was officially married four times. Andrei's first wife was student Elena Glazova, but the couple ended their relationship after three years of marriage. With his second wife, Alla Golubkina, Makarevich has a common son, Ivan. Anna Rozhdestvenskaya (with whom the artist had a stormy romance, but the wedding did not take place) gave him a daughter, Anna. With his next wife, stylist Natasha Golub, the singer divorced in 2010. With the fourth life partner, journalist Einat Klein, he formalized the relationship in 2019.
