How did Baccara start?

The future soloists of the popular Spanish female pop group Maite Mateos and Maria Mendiolo had a sufficient number of common ground.

The girls were almost the same age, they started their careers the same way. These were performances in various Spanish clubs, hotels, cabarets, where tourists from all over the world liked to visit.

At one of the events, a fateful meeting of two performers took place. They became friends, and Maria enthusiastically supported Maite's proposal to create a duet.

They began to perform as a musical group in a nightclub. At some point, conflicts began between the members of the group and the owner of this institution, which ended in their dismissal.

The emergence of the duo Baccara

After leaving the nightclub, the girls went to the beautiful island of the Canary archipelago Fuerteventura. Here they were given the opportunity to perform on stage at the four-star TresIslas Hotel.

The guests really liked the incendiary Spanish numbers of the duet. In this hotel, among the numerous foreign tourists were travelers from Germany.

They enthusiastically greeted the girls, especially when they performed the Spanish flamenco dance of passion. Since the group did not yet have its own repertoire, the singers performed works by the most famous creative teams of that time.

At one of the concerts, an employee of a recording studio was literally fascinated by the duet's performance. He invited the performers to Hamburg, and the girls took advantage of the invitation.

Here rehearsals began with the famous German composer and producer Rolf Soja. Just a week later, the single Yes Sir I Can Boogie was released. The popularity of the composition proved to be extremely successful.

In Germany, Switzerland, she was in the lead in the charts for several weeks, Sweden enjoyed her for more than one month. This is how the pop group Baccara, associated with the magnificent dark red rose, was born.

Triumph of the group

They worked very hard, almost without days off. In the late 1970s, their records sold out with extraordinary speed and in significant numbers. Then the group headed the British charts, becoming the first Spanish-speaking duo to reach such heights.

After some time, the group was recognized as the best duet in Europe and the highest praise - entering the Guinness Book of Records. This female team sold the largest number of records at that time (16 million copies).

For 40 years, a wonderful duo toured all over the world, concerts were sold out in concert halls and stadiums, released records, delighted fans with their work.

The broadcast of songs from the screens of television and radio channels was carried out constantly, the journalists diligently tried to interview the girls.

The released first album of the same name received the highest awards - gold, then - double gold, it also happens with platinum laurels (platinum - double platinum).

The band took part in the XNUMXth Yamaha Popular Music Festival in Tokyo. The duo's great achievement was the representation of Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Paris. The group entered the top ten performers in Germany.

Girls are regular participants in the most popular music shows and indispensable guests of the TV program “Melodies and Rhythms of Foreign Variety Art”, which is very popular in our country. They competed with the German group ARABESQUE.

Different paths

The beginning of the 1980s was marked by a noticeable decline in the work of the duet. The new single released due to Maria's claims was withdrawn from sale.

The singer was not satisfied with the end result of the recording. She filed a claim against the record label, suing her. However, the case was settled without the intervention of court officials.

The duo went to another studio, where they recorded their last work: the single Colorado, the album Bad Boys. Unfortunately, it has not regained its former popularity.

As a result of events, the unique female pop group Baccara ceased to exist in 1981. Beautiful performers (Maite and Maria) decided to be apart from each other, choosing different paths.

Life after the collapse of the Baccarat group

The friendly relations of the girls continued even after the demise of their famous duet. Maria was a guest at Maite's wedding, by the way, this event also became fateful for Maria - here she met her future husband.

Maite tried to revive the Baccara project by collaborating with various partners, but without success. As a result, she returned to her solo career.

Maria gave aerobics lessons for a while. Then she and her new partner released several songs that became Eurodisco hits. She repeatedly visited the USSR, in a later period she performed with concerts in Russia and the CIS countries.
