Eugene Doga: Biography of the composer

Evgeny Dmitrievich Doga was born on March 1, 1937 in the village of Mokra (Moldova). Now this area belongs to Transnistria. His childhood passed in difficult conditions, because it just fell on the period of the war.

The boy's father died, the family was hard. He spent his free time with friends on the street, playing and looking for food. With groceries it was difficult to help the family, he collected berries, mushrooms and edible herbs. This is how they escaped hunger.

Little Zhenya loved music since childhood. He could listen to the local orchestra for hours, even tried to compose music for it. In general, the whole world around attracted the attention of the boy. He saw beauty in everything. Many years later, the artist spoke about one vivid memory from childhood. An orchestra from Chisinau came to them. He was remembered by a significant number of people and unusual instruments. Everyone was fascinated watching their performance, children and adults. 

Zhenya graduated from the 7th grade, and in 1951 he entered the music school. Many were surprised how the boy was accepted there, because he did not have a musical education. Four years later, he entered the Chisinau Conservatory, majoring in composition and cello.

He first studied cello. However, there was a big trouble that put an end to the future as a cellist. His hand lost sensation.

The composer says that the conditions in which he lived led to this. The basement was cold and windy. It was very cold and damp. Only a few months later, the hand began to work again, but he could no longer play the cello, as before. And it was decided to start training in another specialization. At the same time, he graduated from the cello class. 

While studying in the new course, Doga began to write his first works in earnest. The debut work sounded in 1957 on the radio. From this began his dizzying career.

After the first works of the future composer, they began to invite him to radio and television. And also he was accepted into the Moldavian orchestra. Already in 1963, his first string quartet was released.

In parallel with the concert activity, the composer began to thoroughly study the theory of music. He ended up writing a textbook. To do this, I had to take a break in writing new works. But according to Doga, he never regretted it. 

The composer's talent was needed everywhere. He was offered to teach at a music school. He also worked as an editor in one of the music publishing houses in Moldova. 

In all countries where Evgeny Doga gave concerts, he was greeted with a standing ovation. The works have been performed by many contemporary talented musicians all over the world. However, the maestro did not stop creating music. 

The composer says that he is a happy person. He has the opportunity and strength to do what he loves for many decades. 

Personal life

The composer remains faithful to his wife all his life. With his chosen one, Natalia, Evgeny Doga met at the age of 25. It was love at first sight, and after a few years the composer decided to marry.

The girl worked as an engineer and was the opposite of Dogi. Nevertheless, it was in her that the musician saw the ideal woman. In marriage, a daughter, Viorica, was born. She works as a TV director. The composer also has a grandson who does not share his grandfather's love for music. 

According to Evgeny Doga, the family is work. Relationships do not develop by themselves, like long marriages. You need to work on them every day, build brick by brick. Both people need to put in the same amount of effort to be happy together for years to come.

Eugene Doga has created many great compositions throughout his musical career. Throughout his career, the composer has written music of various styles and genres. He has: ballets, operas, cantatas, suites, plays, waltzes, even requiems. Two of the musician's songs were included in the list of the 200 best classical works. In total, he created more than three hundred songs.

One of the most popular works is the waltz for the film “My Sweet and Gentle Beast”. The melody appeared literally overnight, when the composer was improvising during filming. Everyone was surprised when they first heard. Thought it was some old work, it sounded so perfect. Everyone was amazed when they learned that the composer wrote the melody last night. After the premiere of the film, the melody became popular and is widely used to this day. You can hear it on radio and TV shows. Choreographers often use it in their productions.

The composer wrote music for films. Doga collaborated for a long time with Moldovan, Russian and Ukrainian film studios. For example, he wrote music for more than half of the films that were shot at the Moldova Film Studio. 

Doga began touring in the 1970s. He performed all over the world, simultaneously learning the cultures of other countries. It was hosted by the best and largest concert halls. Many conductors, performers and musical groups considered it an honor to perform on the same stage with him. These are Silantyev, Bulakhov, the Romanian Opera Orchestra.

The actor starred in seven films, five of which are documentaries. 

There are 10 books about the musician. Among them are biographies, a collection of essays, memoirs, interviews and correspondence with fans and family.

Ronald Reagan admitted that his favorite tune is the waltz from the movie "My Sweet and Gentle Animal".

The composer draws strength from everything. He believes that inspiration is the concentration of energy. It needs to be collected in order to do something grand in one moment.

Doga's waltz instantly became famous. The success was so overwhelming that queues lined up in stores for records. Moreover, this particular melody sounded twice during the opening of the Olympic Games.

In his opinion, everything you undertake should be done with pleasure. You need to love your job, and then any undertaking will be successful.

Eugene Doga has a significant number of awards and honorary titles. His talent was recognized all over the world, backed up by official regalia. The composer has 15 orders, 11 medals, more than 20 awards. He is an honorary member and academician of several music academies.

The composer has his own star on the Avenue of Stars in Romania and the National Prize for Charity. Doga was recognized as an honorary citizen by several countries, including Romania and Moldova. Eugene is also a People's Artist of Moldova and the USSR and "Person of the Year" in his homeland.  

In 2018, the National Bank of Moldova issued a commemorative coin in honor of the musician. However, the most interesting way of recognizing genius is connected with space. A planet was named after him, which was discovered in 1987.
