Lewis Capaldi is a Scottish songwriter best known for his single Someone You Loved. He discovered his love for music at the age of 4, when he performed at a holiday camp.

His early love of music and performing live led him to become a professional musician at the age of 12.

Being a happy child, always supported by his parents, Capaldi went through school without paying much attention to academic sciences.

He started writing original tracks and playing guitar at the age of 11. He took every opportunity that came his way to perform in pubs and venues in and around Bathgate.

He built his career working on original singles, recording songs and posting them on YouTube. He also played live concerts while releasing tracks on video hosting.

The success of his single Bruises led to general recognition, and soon the young artist was signed to record labels Virgin EMI Records and Capitol Records.

After releasing two EPs, he announced his debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent which was released on May 17, 2019.

Childhood and youth of Lewis Capaldi

Lewis Capaldi was born on October 7, 1996 in Glasgow (Scotland, UK). He is the youngest of four children. He is of Scottish-Italian descent. Lewis grew up in Bathgate, which is located between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

During a family trip to a holiday camp, he went up to the stage where the band was playing and performed some Queen songs. He knew this was what he always wanted to do.

With the support of his parents, he constantly worked to prepare for future music. Lewis was writing songs at the age of 11 and playing in various places around Bathgate, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Back then, he used every opportunity he got, even if it meant only playing cover versions of other bands' songs.

Capaldi enjoyed school, not as a scholar, but as someone who often entertained his classmates with his jokes and actions. He preferred to have fun and play music rather than devote time to lessons.

He continued to create and play his tracks, often recording songs in his bedroom and posting his creations on YouTube. He soon developed a dedicated fan base.

His musical career began on March 31, 2017 when he released the track Bruises. He became the fastest unsigned artist to reach a quarter of a million views on Spotify, and eventually the track had over 28 million views on YouTube.

The singer later signed with Virgin EMI Records and Capitol Records after the success of the Bruises.

Lewis Capaldi career

Capaldi released his debut EP Bloom on October 20, 2017, shortly before the release of the Bruises single. He worked on an EP with Grammy Award producer Malay.

After the success of the Bruises and the first EP, he was invited to support many famous bands and musicians such as Rag'n'Bone Man in November 2017, Milky Chance in January 2018, Niall Horan in March 2018 and Samuel Smith in May 2018.

His solo career continued with his fourth headlining tour in the UK and Europe where he played in front of a huge crowd.

During the summer of 2018, he also took part in many famous festivals such as Lollapolooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Osheaga, Reading & Leeds Festival, Rize, and TRNSMT.

On 13 July 2018, BBC Radio 1 selected him as one of two "Brit List" appearances. Following this, in August 2018 he was invited to open for Irish indie rock band Kodaline at a concert in Belfast.

Capaldi released his second EP Breach on November 8, 2018. It contained several previously released singles such as: Tough and Grace and some new songs such as the hit Someone You Loved.

On November 14, 2018, the singer performed a cover of Lady Gaga's Shallow from the hit film A Star Is Born live on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge segment.

And in 2019, he played in various places around the world, including at several summer festivals. Tickets for his show in 2019 were sold out long before the performance date.

Capaldi also supported Bastille on the Still Avoiding Tomorrow tour in 2019.

His debut album, announced on February 18, 2019, released on May 17, 2019 is titled Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. The singer spent a week in recording studios and collected tracks that he worked on in 2018.

He also announced a UK tour set to begin in March 2020. This tour will include a unique LIVE LIVE initiative designed to help fans who want to attend his shows but usually can't because they suffer from anxiety, panic or other emotional difficulties.

Basic work

The Bruises single is important in bringing him into the mainstream. It was released digitally on May 17, 2017 by Virgin Records as part of his debut Bloom EP.

He broke Spotify records for most views and signed him to record labels.

Someone You Loved is the singer's track from his second EP Breach and was released on November 8, 2018 and became his first number on the UK Singles Chart where it stayed at the top of the chart for 7 weeks.

Peter Capaldi (famous actor and distant relative) is featured in the song's video, which depicts the emotional story of two families involved in organ donation.

He received more than 21 million views on YouTube, after which the number of subscribers on social networks became over 1 million.

Awards and achievements

In 2017, Capaldi won Best Acoustic Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards and Best Breakthrough Artist at the Scottish Music Awards.

In the same year, it was also named one of the Vevo dscvr. Artists For Observation in 2018.

In 2018 he received the Breakthrough Award at the Great Scottish Awards and the Rising Star Award at the Forth Awards. He was also on BBC Music's The Sound of 2018.

In 2019, Capaldi received the MTV Brand New for 2019 award. He was also nominated for the British Critic's Choice Award.

Family and personal life

Capaldi's older brother Warren is also a musician, and they took guitar lessons together as children. He is known to be related to actor Peter Capaldi, who played the Twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who.

He is also distantly related to nuclear physicist Joseph Capaldi, who worked on the international Higgs Boson project.

Capaldi's unique initiative to monitor fans suffering from panic attacks on his 2020 tour is the result of fans writing to him mentioning the issue, as well as his own experiences of panic attacks while performing on stage.
