Kurt Cobain (vocals and guitar) for a long time urged Krist Novoselic (bass guitar) to create his own musical group, but he stubbornly did not agree.

After 3 years, already in 1987, Christ liked the recording of the first composition of Kurt Cobain under the name "Fecal Matter", and he himself insisted on creating a team.

They took Bob McFedden as drummer, but he left the project a month later. Then they invited Aaron Burkhard (drums), who also left the project after two months.

This time, they managed to quickly change the drummer, Dale Krover (drums) became a new member of the team, and with his participation, the team finally recorded the first demos. But this drummer did not stay long either - Dave Foster (drums) soon replaced him.

Drummer Chad Channing

In the first few months, the team could not decide on a name, and finally, in early 1988, the guys gave their team the name "Nirvana".

Kurt Cobain talked about that. that contrary to the accepted principles for punk-rock bands at that time, choosing something rude and dirty for the band's name, the guys chose a nice, kind name for their band.

The first performance of the Nirvana team took place in March 1988. Not even six months passed, as the drummer Chad Channing (drums) changed again in the team, this time for as much as 2 years.

The first official song of the group was the composition "Love Buzz / Big Cheese". Already in the summer of 1989, Nirvana, produced by Jack Endino, released their first album, Bleach, under the Sub Pop label.

Of course, the music genre of the first album was influenced by The Melvins and Black Sabbath. The release of the first album brought the team the first fame and popularity on small college radio stations. And with him, the musical group went on a tour of America, performing in 26 cities.

A feature of Nirvana's performances was a kind of "ritual" - the guys after the end of the concert smashed the equipment to smithereens. Krist Novoselic later admitted that they did this in order to quickly leave the stage.

Kurt wrote the lyrics and music for each of the songs on his own. Oбычнo, нaигрывaя нa aкустичeскoй гитaрe, oн сoчинял, стрeмясь сoздaть симбиoз тяжёлoгo и лёгкoгo звучaний, нo всeгдa пoдчёркивaл, чтo нe любит, кoгдa eгo считaют eдинствeнным aвтoрoм, пoскoльку другиe учaстники кoллeктивa тaкжe игрaли вeсoмую рoль в принятии oтдeльных рeшeний oтнoситeльнo кaждoй кoмпoзиции.

Sponsored the recording of the first album Jason Everman, whose name was recorded on the cover of the disc as a guitarist, although he was never such, but the guys like it Everman to the work of the team.

Kurt did not hide that the first songs of the band were torn and sharp. But over time, the compositions became more smooth and pop, and the vocalist himself became happier. The team grew significantly in their compositions: they began to raise the themes of love and feelings, conflicts and situations.

Nirvana: New Horizons

In the early 90s, starting work on a new studio album, the guys again began to clash with the drummer, it seemed to the guys that Chad Channing was not pulling, well, Chad himself was angry that they would listen to him does not affect the process.

It was not possible to find a common language and the musician left the group, after a couple of weeks the new drummer Dale Krover took the place behind the drums, and a little later - Dan Peters. But on this, the vacancy for the drummer did not close, and after a couple of months, having heard several chords played by Dave Grohl, Kurt and Krist immediately took him to their team.

And so the main final composition of the Nirvana group was formed.

In 1990, the musicians signed a contract with a new label and started recording a new studio album called "Nevermind". The first single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from this album instantly became popular, thanks to its constant broadcasts on the MTV music channel.

In January 1991, the band's second album Nevermind reached number one on the Billboard charts, leaving behind Michael Jackson's disc.

Kurt Cobain: personal life

In February 1992, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love (the leader of the rather heavy female indie-rock band Hole) entered into an official marriage and announced that they were expecting a child by autumn. Rumors began to spread that future parents specifically sit on heroin.

And especially the rumors intensified when in the summer the guys did not go on tour on a full-scale tour of America in support of the second album, citing palpable fatigue. The guys played only a few concerts and performed in England at the Reading festival.

Kurt Cobain suffered from terrible stomach pains, which was confirmed when, after a concert in June, he ended up in a Belfast hospital.

Nevertheless, rumors about heroin continued to haunt them, and the article in Vanity Fair became the most scandalous, in which, as if by chance, it was said that the pregnant Courtney was using hemp. Future parents persistently denied such rumors and even publicly threatened to punish the author of the article.

To eat 18 August 1992, Paira was Randed by the healthy girl Francis bin Kobein, they came to the fact of the child’s service, which was tired.

When rumors began to circulate about Kurt's poor health, and also that the team would soon break up, the guys decided to use this rumor and at their next performance they joked: After a few minutes, the musician got up and joined the rest of the participants. This warmed up the public. The beloved team was gladly welcomed by the fans and the joke only raised the degree of performance.

Nirvana: Music Again

To make the new album sound more daring, defiant and almost unprocessed, the guys invited producer Steve Albini, under whose leadership the third album “In Utero” was recorded within just two weeks. But it was raw and unfinished. The guys did not like all the compositions, they lacked some kind of completeness, the album turned out to be too sluggish and not energetic.

Addiction Kurt Cobain

At this time, rumors and gossip were again crawling around Kurt Cobain. On May 2, 1993, Kurt Cobain overdosed on heroin. A month later, Courtney called the police to a house in Seattle to remove Kurt, who was locked in the bathroom and threatened to commit suicide, from him.

Before the release of the album "In Utero" during the July New Music Seminar, which was held at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, Kurt Cobain again had an overdose.

At that moment, reports began to appear regularly in the press, including an article in Newsweek that DCG was dissatisfied with the released album “In Utero” and accused the Nirvana team of deliberately making the album

Both the studio and the group completely denied such rumors. For the final completion of the compositions, it was decided to remaster the recordings with REM producer Scott Litt.

After a week of hospitalization, Cobain returned to Seattle, but his psyche was extremely unstable. On March 18, 1994, the police spoke to Kurt, who threatened suicide by locking himself in a room with a weapon.

Courtney and Nirvana arranged a rehab treatment, placing Kurt at the Exodus Recovery Center in Los Angeles on March 30. However, on April 1, Cobain escaped from the clinic and returned to Seattle.
