Once, the performers performed at The Hungry I coffee house, where they made a fateful acquaintance with Michelle Gilliam, the only member of the legendary band. Michelle's arrival is connected not only with the expansion of the group. In 1962, John left his wife and children to marry a young vocalist.

In 1964, The Journeymen announced their breakup. John and Michelle team up as a duo. The duo soon expanded into a trio. Another member, Marshall Brickman, joined the performers. The trio of vocalists formed the New Journeymen.

The musical compositions of the trio lacked the tenor. This problem was solved when the singers got to know Danny Doherty, a native of Canada. At one time, Danny played with Zalman Janowski. On the eve of the New Year, Doherty officially became a member of the new team.

The prototype of the future quartet was The Mugwumps, which included Cass Elliot, her husband Jimi Hendrix, Denny Doherty and Zalman Yanovsky. We can say that The Mugwumps broke up into two strong bands - The Mamas and The Papas and The Lovin' Spoonful.

Cass Elliot, a close friend of Danny, is still considered one of the brightest members of the group. In the team, she was called nothing more than "Mama Cass." The woman got the nickname because of the extra pounds. At the same time, she admitted that she never had complexes because of her fullness and was not deprived of the attention of men.

Cass Elliot finally joined the group in 1965. At that time, the rest of the performers just went on vacation to the Virgin Islands. After a summer vacation in California, the team returned to New York. Interestingly, the most recognizable song of California Dreamin' was written during the holiday.

Presentation of the song California Dreamin'

As Phillips composed California Dreamin', the musical composition was created on just three chords. Phil Sloan, a composer and musician who worked at the Dunhill recording studio, already worked on the arrangement for the studio recording of the track.

After Phillips included the song, Sloan was asked to remake it. The solo on the alto flute was played by the famous jazz saxophonist Bud Schenk. Schenck listened to a snippet of the song where he was to play and recorded his part from the first take. The sound of the saxophone gave the song a special glamor.

California Dreamin' is the band's first hit, which remains the hallmark of The Mamas & the Papa to this day. This is the composition with which the small history of the famous band began.

Music by The Mamas & the Papas

The quartet lasted only three years. For creative activity the group has published 5 studio albums. The team's career was accompanied by minor problems due to internal conflicts. Michelle Phillips and Danny Doherty had a love relationship at the very beginning. Soon Johnny Cash found out about the love between the vocalists. Danny was secretly in love with Michelle.

Despite the conflicts, the musicians found the strength to perform on the same stage. John even wrote the song I Saw Her Again in honor of this event.

Michelle was windy. She soon had an affair with Gene Clark of The Byrds, which angered both John and Danny. As a result, the girl was asked to leave the group. She was replaced by Jill Gibson.

But Jill was only with the band for a few months. John brought Michelle back to The Mamas & the Papas. In addition, the couple resumed their love relationship.

Around this time period, John composed one of the San Francisco hippie anthems (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair). The track is known to be performed by Scott McKenzie, although there is also a recording of the composition with vocals by Phillips.
