Lake Malawi is a Czech indie pop band from Trshinec. The first mention of the group appeared in 2013. However, significant attention was drawn to the musicians by the fact that in 2019 they represented the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song Friend of a Friend. The Lake Malawi group took an honorable 11th place.
The history of the founding and composition of the Lake Malawi group
The Lake Malawi team was founded by Albert Cherny in 2013. The guys “borrowed” the name of the group from the popular track of the Bon Iver group. From the beginning of the creative biography, the Lake Malawi group planned to carry out activities outside the country.
The original members of the team included:
- Albert Black (vocals, guitar);
- Jeron Schubert (bass and keyboards);
- Antonina Hrabala (percussion instruments);
- Pavlo Palata (former member/guitar).
Now the team acts as a trio. The guitarist Pavlo Palata left the band. The musician at the time of the decision to leave considered the team unpromising.
Its founder, Albert Cherny, independently filled the repertoire of the Lake Malawi group. The frontman already had considerable stage experience.
At one time, the musician was part of the Charlie Straight group. For their work, Albert and his team received four Anděl Czech Academy of Music awards, two Slavík awards and an MTV award.
The creative path of Lake Malawi
In 2014, the presentation of the debut single Always June took place. The musicians performed the song live during an interview with BBC London.
In the same year, the band performed at Czech music festivals. Namely: Colors of Ostrava and Rock for People, as well as at The Great Escape Festival in the UK.

In 2015, the musicians released the EP We Are Making Love Again. A few years later, the band's discography was replenished with the disc Surrounded By Light. The presented album received a lot of rave reviews from fans and music critics.
Participation in Eurovision 2019
The group represented the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv. To the judgment of experienced jury and spectators, the guys performed the track Friend of a Friend.
ČT has chosen Lake Malawi for the second season of their Eurovision Song CZ. The selection was online. The audience chose from 8 candidates.
As a result, thanks to the composition Friend of a Friend, the musicians got 11th place. The authors of the composition are: Jan Steinsdörfer, Maciej Mikołaj Trybulets and Albert Cerny.
